On the Road Again

It was a long, hot, summer and we’re glad to be on the road again.  We spent Saturday night, Sept. 30, in the RV in our driveway, and were under way on Sunday morning.  Our first day wasn’t a big one…we traveled just 100 miles and parked behind a convenience store in Hamilton, Texas, so we could check on our house and the cattle at the farm.  And, of course pick up some stuff we wanted to take with us.

Day two wasn’t so pretty.  It started fine, with a beautiful walk at the farm which is lush and green after another year of good rain.  Colt and Rue got to move the cows around a bit, so they  were happy.  Then, we stopped in Stephenville for an outstanding lunch at Hard Eight BBQ

All was well until we approached Fort Worth.  Lots of construction, blocked exits, etc.  We took at least three wrong turns, each one resulting in our having to do a U-turn to get back on track.  Our Co-Pilot Truck software wasn’t much help; it must need to be updated because “Mr. Rogers,” the voice of Co-Pilot Truck, kept getting lost.  Driving directions on my iPhone weren’t much better; it couldn’t find the Isle du Bois Unit of Lake Ray Rogers State Park and kept trying to send us to the wrong side of the lake.  Looonnggg story short…with phone directions from the park, we finally pulled in around 4 and settled into a site with a nice view of the lake.

But that wasn’t the end of our less-than-perfect day.  When we opened the door of the RV, we discovered that the fridge and a couple of cabinets had opened along the way, and their contents were strewn from one end of the coach to the other.  On the bright side, the dogs enjoyed raw eggs with their dinner and I was very relieved that the beer bottles and milk carton had not released their contents.  That was a sight I would rather forget, and one photo I didn’t take.

Two days later, we drove from Texas to Oklahoma City in a driving rainstorm.  It’s not a long trip, but it seemed to take forever.  Most of the "scenery" looked like this.

After a night at Mustang Run RV Park, we drove on to Hutchinson, Kansas, (again in the rain) and parked in the Kansas State Fairgrounds RV Park with some 90 other heavy-duty trucks and trailers and some 180 of our friends.

The dogs were unconcerned with the weather, and snoozed through it all.
