More Custer Memories

Our time in Custer seemed all too short, as it usually does.  We had a grand time visiting with friends Rick and Linda Lorentz, who have been work-camping at Custer’s Gulch this summer.  We were joined  for several days by Dave and Marlene Shaw, shown here as we celebrated a great meal together.  It was even more memorable because we enjoyed delicious pork ribs Rick prepared on his Trager pellet cooker.  John always said you couldn't get really good pork ribs outside of Texas, but he has admitted these were exceptional.

We have known Dave and Marlene for several years, now and the Bagley girls are both quite taken with their beautiful red border collie, Jake.

We did get up and personal with some wildlife while we were in Custer.  Fishing excursions up the stream in the Grace Coolidge area of CSP yielded a number of luscious rainbow trout.  Well, they weren’t exactly luscious when caught, but these two that Rick and I caught were certainly pretty.  Once prepared and shared with Rick and Linda, they certainly qualified as luscious.

Travels through CSP did yield close-ups of some of its famous bison.  A  number of them were entertaining tourists along the Wildlife Loop.

And this big bull strolled along beside the road, oblivious to traffic and the cameras.

As we passed through the park one of our last days there, we spied another of the big bulls just across from the visitor center.  The sun angle was terrible, but I managed to get a couple of shots.

Then, I asked John to turn around and drive into the RV area so I could get a better shot.  Sure enough, just as we pulled in and I got out of the car with my camera…he laid down with a loud “humph,” probably just to spite me.

It was a short two weeks, but we look forward to returning for a longer stay next year.

  1. I trust those shots of the buffalo were taken with a very long telephoto lens.
